This work, in which characters fight demons using esoteric Buddhist mantras and mudras, has surpassed 20 million copies in total sales and invented the demon-slaying battle genre itself, which led to *Jujutsu Kaisen*. The author, Makoto Ogino, has an unusual background, having graduated from the Faculty of Science at Nagoya University. In his youth, he discovered his unique vein of esoteric Buddhism within the constraints imposed by his father, who forbade him from drawing anything erotic or violent. In 1988, a live-action film adaptation was produced as a Japanese-Hong Kong co-production, starring Hiroshi Mikami and Yuen Biao.
