How To Prune An Abandoned Grapevine

To prune an abandoned grapevine depends on several factors : height of the plant , support system , branch networks and their locations on the plant . If the branches are low and below the support wire , you cut most of them into short spurs in case you may need to replace the trunk someday . If the branches are still canes and not woody , you may prune them and leave like ten to twenty branches . Prune them spur if the grapevine is spur pruned , or cane if it is otherwise . But if you don't know whether the grapevine is cane or spur pruned , in that case prune half of the cane spur and the remaining half cane . When it fruits you will see which of the prunings produced the fruit whether it is spur or cane . From this you will know how to prune them in future . In some cases , some grapevines can be pruned cane or spur , in that case you chose the most productive of the technique in your future prunings . If the old abandoned grapevine is like this in this video , your objective is just to set up the right structure for the grapevine and use the appropriate training system of your choice .
