Is it really a street or an urban highway? In this video, I walk along the Paseo de Alfonso XII in Madrid, one of the main thoroughfares connecting Atocha with the Puerta de Alcalá, to analyze how much space is dedicated to cars and how much to people. During the walk, we measure the sidewalks, analyze the distribution of public space, observe the actual occupancy by cars, and discuss how the design of many streets affects mobility, noise, pollution, and quality of life. Although it is located next to the Retiro Park and is part of the Landscape of Light, a World Heritage Site, this avenue functions more like an urban highway than a street designed for strolling, relaxing, or getting around on foot or by bicycle. In this analysis, I'm joined by @diazvillanueva, with whom I discuss urban planning, traffic, sustainable mobility, and how these major avenues could be transformed to make cities more livable without harming those who truly need to use a car.
