At the 1980 Moscow Olympics, he was considered a sure bet for a medal, but unfortunately, he was unable to participate due to Japan's boycott. He was called the "phantom gold medalist." Recognized for his brilliant achievements, he joined New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 1980. Afterward, he partnered with Riki Choshu and Jumbo Tsuruta, winning various titles in different organizations. He engaged in numerous fierce battles against top wrestlers from around the world. In June 2019, his right leg was amputated due to gangrene. He is diligently undergoing rehabilitation and is scheduled to participate as a torchbearer in the Olympic Torch Relay to be held in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture on March 28, 2021.
