In some situations the diagnosis is clear (for example sequelae of pulmonary tuberculosis) but there are many other possible causes. It is important to know if the fibrosis is progressive (getting worse over time). This can be assessed by monitoring symptoms over time (is shortness of breath getting worse?) but also by spirometry which is done periodically in people with a diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis to see if the disease remains stable over time or worsens. If a worsening of lung function occurs, additional consultations and explorations such as a high-resolution computed tomography are necessary to try to find a cause.
