Charcoal Made Simple: Draw a Bird with Depth

Join us live and learn how to create a simple yet striking charcoal drawing - focusing on a bird with a soft, atmospheric background. In this relaxed demo, you’ll be guided through a user-friendly and expressive approach to charcoal. We’ll begin with a short introduction to the artist’s work and teaching style, then move into understanding tonal values - blending charcoal to build midtones, lifting out highlights, and applying rich darks to create a strong sense of depth and form. You’ll explore different types of charcoal and what they offer in terms of tonal range, learn how to make and use your own charcoal powder, and experiment with various application techniques. We’ll also practise lifting methods to refine light areas and re-evaluate values before applying everything to a simple bird composition. Draw along using any charcoal materials you have at home.Perfect for all skill levels especially if you’re new to charcoal or want a more intuitive, less intimidating way to approach drawing.
