Goldsmith Lecture: Juan Ignacio del Cueto, “On Felix Candela, Builder of Concrete Shells," Fall 2016

October 31, 2016 Juan Ignacio del Cueto graduated from the Facultad de Arquitectura, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (FA-UNAM) in 1986 and received his PhD in architecture from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona, Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, Spain (ETSAB-UPC) in 1996. His doctoral dissertation, Spanish Architects Exiled in Mexico, received the Extraordinary PhD Award at the UPC. He currently serves as professor at the FA-UNAM, as a senior researcher and coordinator of “Centro de Investigaciones en Arquitectura, Urbanismo y Paisaje” (CIAUP FA-UNAM), specializing in 20th-century architecture. At the same institution, he served as the general coordinator of the Max Cetto Workshop (2000-2005) and was founding editor of the journal Bitácora-Arquitectura. del Cueto has been a visiting professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Puerto Rico (2005-2006) and in 2011, received the “Juan O’Gorman Award” bestowed by the Society of Mexican Architects as recognition of his professional excellence in research. He was the curator of “Félix Candela 1910-2010,” an exhibition that was featured in Spain, Mexico, and New York between September 2010 and March 2012, and was the editor of a book of the same name. He curated "Candela’s Shells,” on view at UTSOA from October 31 - November 28, and also “Presence of the Spanish Exile in Mexican Architecture," which was accompanied by his book, Spanish Architects Exiled in Mexico.
