The Rise and Fall of Skateboarding in Other Games

Skateboarding wasn’t always everywhere in video games. Before 1999, it was mostly confined to its own genre. But with the release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, that changed. Throughout the early 2000s, skateboarding began appearing across a wide range of games, from platformers to open worlds, becoming a reflection of its growing presence in mainstream culture. What started as a niche mechanic quickly became a trend. But that trend didn’t last. With the release of EA Skate in 2007, the genre shifted toward realism and simulation, making skateboarding harder to implement in other games. As the design philosophy changed, so did its presence across the industry. In this video, I explore why skateboarding showed up in everything, and why it eventually stopped. 00:00 Intro 00:49 Part 1: Before It Spread 03:23 Part 2: Suddenly Everywhere 07:01 Part 3: The Shift Video Credits ‪@Jarekthegamingdragon‬ ‘Spyro Skateboarding’    • Spyro Skateboarding   ‪@Novayon‬ ‘That Time Kingdom Hearts Did Skateboarding’    • That Time Kingdom Hearts Did Skateboarding   ‪@SickyNar‬ ‘Jak II Speedrunning: JET Board Tutorial Mission Escape’    • Jak II Speedrunning: JET Board Tutorial Mi...   ‪@xGarbett‬ 'High on Life 2 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Warehouse Easter Egg (Secret Level)'    • High on Life 2 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Wa...   Join this channel to become a member with some perks: 🔗   / @onehipyt   You can also support me on Ko-Fi here: 🔗https://ko-fi.com/onehip I buy my own PC games from Fanatical and Green Man Gaming, and you can too with legally sourced Steam keys at discounted prices.
