Amidst false myths and generalizations, Africa is often described and portrayed as a compact whole, characterized by a shared history, a common language, and a similar lifestyle and culture among its diverse nations. The continent, however, is far from the stereotype of Biafra or modern, high-tech Kigali. Suffice it to say that its 54 recognized states (55 if Western Sahara is included) are home to over 3,000 distinct ethnic groups. Faced with this complexity, I decided to chat with Chiara Piaggio, an Africanist and expert on sub-Saharan Africa, who published the book "Africa Isn't Like This" in September 2025.
