The Omani Herders Who Turn Desert Mountains Into Life | SLICE

In Oman’s Jebel Akhdar, life depends on a delicate balance between mountains, animals, water and cultivated terraces. In the village of Maabit, Al Zalfa Al Subhi tends her goats every morning, helping the young feed before leading the herd into the steep mountain slopes. The animals survive on dry shrubs, leaves, dates and fodder gathered from nearby oases. But this is more than livestock rearing. In Jebel Akhdar, herders and farmers have worked together for generations. Goats and sheep provide meat, trade goods and precious manure, which enriches the soil of the terraces and keeps the oasis gardens fertile. Scientists studying the region reveal how this closed loop sustains life in extreme conditions. The gardens create shade, humidity and fertile ground, allowing insects, reptiles, wildflowers and medicinal plants to flourish in what would otherwise be desert. A portrait of a mountain society where nothing is wasted, and where ancient knowledge still helps people, animals and plants survive together.
