But, as this investigation reveals, not all that glitters is gold. In the world of luxury, leather means record profits. For brands like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, more than 70% of their profits come from leather goods. But where does this luxury leather come from? Much of the raw material is cured in a small region of Tuscany, where the heavy and difficult labor is outsourced to immigrants. Temperatures in factories can reach 45°C, and workers—many on temporary contracts—are often exploited and mistreated. We hear testimonies of workers seriously injured on the job and then attacked for daring to complain. Then there is leather, another iconic material of luxury. Today, most fur comes from China, where 70 million animals are killed each year for their skins. There, animals have no rights or protection, and the conditions on the farms are atrocious. We gained access to one of these farms, and what we found is far from the luxurious image promoted by the brands. Animal suffering, deplorable hygienic conditions... discoveries that will outrage.
