El Faro | Entrevista a Pepe Colubi | 09/03/2021

Comedian and writer Pepe Colubi (Madrid, 1966) visits El Faro this morning and chats with Mara Torres under the pseudonym 'Casuario', traveling through some of the moments in his life he shares with all the listeners. "The sea, instead of me finding it, found me," this Gatopardo was born in Asturias and recalls many moments from his childhood on those beaches. He grew up in a "very bustling and festive" house where his parents and three sisters shared a space he recalls as free and inspiring. "I remember that in the middle of my studies, I hitchhiked to Algeria with a friend in the middle of school, and my parents accepted it naturally. They support our absurd causes," he explains. This 'Casuario', a child of the 1960s, remembers, along with Mara, 'Don Julio', his primary school literature teacher who shaped his life. "It was my first moment of discovering the treasure of books," he explained. This Lighthouse has one thing: it makes it possible to see places from the past again. Colubi confesses and shares scenes from his life, like the time he was offered a command position and flatly refused. He was made for other things. His mother told him, as if sharing and consenting to that decision: "It's better, because it's very hot in Madrid in April." This Gatopardo inherits that ironic outlook and sarcastic distance from life. His mother is practically the light that permeates this entire half-hour interview. "I was a huge fan of 'Muchachada Nui,' and when we received the merchandise that Raúl Cimas had given us, my mother was already sick in the hospital. At the funeral, my sisters and I decided to wear that badge because we knew she would have found it very funny; she would be celebrating from another dimension," he explained. Now, he has just published his latest book, 'Dispersión,' in which he maintains that way of writing, speaking, and seeing life, looking into its eyes and laughing at the same time.
