The history of Canada began with the arrival of the first humans on the American continent around 25,000 years ago, who arrived from Asia via Beringia. Around 12,000 years ago, the entire current Canadian territory was already practically occupied by these first peoples called Paleo-Indians. And, from that moment on, other peoples such as the Na-Dene, the Thule and the Inuit began to inhabit what is now Canada. According to the Norse sagas, in the year 1000, the Norwegian explorer Leif Eriksson left Greenland and arrived in Newfoundland, thus becoming the first European to set foot on continental America. However, it was in 1497, when the Italian navigator Giovanni Cabot arrived on the east coast of Canada under the orders of the King of England, that the colonization of the Canadian territory began. Soon after Cabot's arrival, the French led by Jacques Cartier also arrived in Canada and began to dispute with the British control over the eastern territories. Between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Spanish and Russians claimed territories on the west coast, leading to the formation of the borders with Alaska, while the borders between the current Canadian territory and the United States began to be established in the south. In 1867, the Canadian Confederation was created, an autonomous dominion of the United Kingdom, and the British colonies and territories in North America began to be gradually integrated into the Confederation. From the 20th century onwards, Canada developed its economy and infrastructure, gained increasing autonomy from the United Kingdom and became independent from the British after the establishment of the Constitution Act of 1982.
