He had written the title long before as the first idea for a song title in a notebook. The first release of "Proud Mary" was as a single on December 30, 1968. It was released as a 7" single with the B-side "Born on the Bayou" (catalog number: 619). On January 10, 1969, the song was released as part of Bayou Country, the second studio album by Creedence Clearwater Revival (catalog number: BLPS 19002). To promote the song, the band performed it at the Woodstock Festival, among other venues. Music The song has three verses and is set in D major. In the Creedence Clearwater Revival version, a guitar solo is played between the second and third verses. Additionally, the piece is characterized by its intro, which is played before the first verse, the instrumental section, and the third verse. Reception The song was called the best "Song of the Year" by Bob Dylan. "Proud Mary" ranked #155 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Commercial Success Chart Positions The single stayed on the Billboard charts for over a year, reaching number two. In Germany, it reached number four, in the UK it reached number eight, and it topped the charts in Austria.
