It is one of the largest centers of industry, transport and culture in Germany. Population - 573,648 people (as of 31.12.2023) The old town, destroyed by bombing on February 13-14, 1945 and partially restored, is located on the left bank of the Elbe. Hofkirche or Cathedral of St. Trinity Cathedral (1738-1756) is a Baroque Catholic cathedral, former court church and burial place of the Saxon monarchs. Semperoper (1881-1887) is a neo-Baroque masterpiece. The building was badly damaged in 1945 and stood in ruins until 1977. It was thoroughly restored in 1977-1985. Frauenkirche (1726-1743) is a Baroque Protestant church. The Golden Horseman (1735) is an equestrian statue of the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland Augustus the Strong. Church of the Holy Cross (1764-1800) is a Baroque Protestant church. Brühl's Terrace with its grand staircase (1814, designed by G. F. Thormeyer) and magnificent neo-Baroque buildings: the Saxon Parliament (1901-1907), the Academy of Arts (1884-1894), the Albertinum Museum (1884-1887), etc. The Cholera Fountain (Gutschmidt Fountain) is a fountain erected in the center of Dresden in 1843 with a donation from Baron von Gutschmidt as a token of gratitude for the city being spared by the first cholera pandemic. The New Town Hall (1905-1910) with a 100-meter tower. Partially destroyed in 1945, restored in the 1950s.
