The person who belittled you… God may make him the reason for your greatest provision. In moments of weakness, when we feel that someone has diminished our worth, disregarded our feelings, or closed a door we hoped for, our souls falter and are burdened by worldly worries. But reflecting on the wisdom of the Quran and Sunnah, and the insights left to us by those who know God, reveals a truth entirely different from what our immediate feelings perceive. The insult you might think is the end of the road is, in reality, a subtle redirection from God; it is a push that compels you to abandon what is not meant for you and turn towards what God has decreed for you. Often, the reason for the greatest provision that God opens for His servant is that small door that was cruelly closed in his face by someone else. It is a radical reconsideration of the concept of provision, for God is the Provider, the All-Powerful, the Firm, and the keys to sustenance are in His hands. He may send you good through those you consider your adversaries, so that you may learn that divine providence is above all other plans, and that divine bounty comes from where you least expect it. Thus, He teaches you true reliance on Him and contentment with His decree. While being humiliated by others may be painful to the human soul, from the perspective of spiritual insight, it is a hidden blessing. It reveals the truth about your preoccupation with God's creation rather than the Creator, and it calls you to purify your heart from attachment to people's praise or criticism. Imam al-Ghazali, in his "Ihya Ulum al-Din" (Revival of Religious Sciences), spoke of the affliction of attachment to anything other than God, and how the heart's attachment to created beings leads to humiliation and regret. Meanwhile, Ibn Arabi saw humiliation from others as a manifestation of the Truth, freeing the servant from the shackles of apparent causes and leading him to detachment from the One True Cause. It is a moment of the spirit's triumph over the ego, a realization that whoever humiliates you is merely a conduit, while sustenance, honor, and dignity are all in the hands of the One who says to a thing, "Be," and it is. From this point, a great door of sustenance opens—not only material sustenance, but also the sustenance of certainty, tranquility, and closeness to God, which is the greatest and most lasting sustenance. In this contemplative journey, we draw inspiration from the life of our master, Abdul Qadir al-Jilani, and his spirit of strength and steadfastness. He taught us that the righteous servant is not swayed by the winds of praise or blame, but rather sees with the eye of insight that everything that emanates from creation is by the command and will of God. So, if someone belittles you, know that God intends to elevate your status in the realm of "There is no god but God," and to make it a reason for your complete devotion to Him alone. The true challenge is not in responding to insult with a similar insult, but in transforming it into spiritual energy that propels you towards righteous deeds, sincere supplication, and the certainty that God does not waste the reward of those who do good. It is a lesson in the wisdom of adversity: knowing how to turn the bad deeds of others into good deeds for yourself, and how to transform the affliction of creation into the blessings of the Creator. This is the secret of the gnostics: to see in everything a sign from God, and in every situation a lesson that elevates their status.
