As Türkiye's first and largest Lord of the Rings website, we are compiling our long-standing Middle-earth encyclopedia into a video. Before Isildur's arrival, the Army of the Dead was known as the Men of the Mountains and lived in the White Mountains. During the Dark Years, before Gondor and Arnor were founded, the Dark Lord Sauron ruled Middle-earth. Sauron was called "Lord of the World." The peoples of Middle-earth, especially Men, suffered greatly during this period. Consequently, the Men of the Mountains came to fear and worship Sauron. After Gondor was founded, Isildur and the King of the Mountains met at Mount Erech, where the Erech Stone, approximately 3-4 meters in diameter, was located, brought from Numenor. Isildur promised to protect them against Sauron if they swore fealty to him. The King of the Mountains swore fealty to Isildur and promised to fight for him. However, when the War of the Last Alliance began, the Men of the Mountains broke their oath by refusing to fight against their former master, Sauron, despite Isildur's call. After the battle, Isildur named them "Oathbreakers" and cursed them: "You shall be the last king. And if the West rises stronger than your Dark Lord, this curse be upon you and your people: you shall never rest until you fulfill your oath. For this war will continue for a time uncounted in years, and you will be called to duty once more before the end." Fearing Isildur's wrath, the Men of the Mountains fled to the hills and into secret places, hiding there. Their fear prevented them from fighting alongside Sauron. Why Didn't the Army of the Dead Go to Mordor? The Significance of the Curse in Middle-earth: So, what does Isildur's curse mean? Curses carry a certain weight in Middle-earth, and almost all curses have been found throughout Middle-earth's history. But what makes Isildur's curse different from others is that while other curses affect a single individual, Isildur's curse affects an entire community. It prevents oathbreakers from dying for thousands of years. As for why Isildur's curse worked, oaths and oath-breaking are a big deal in Tolkien's universe. Isildur was King of both Gondor and Arnor when he cast the curse, as he did not cede the rule of Gondor to Meneldil, son of Anarion, and he also possessed the One Ring. So, as King of all men, with the One Ring in his hand, he cursed the Men of the Mountains. The Oathbreakers are now dead, but because of the curse, their spirits cannot leave Middle-earth and cannot find peace. This army, which continues to live in the White Mountains, where the Stone of Erech is located, instills great fear in the people living around them. They are not happy with this situation either.
