In this video, I share my personal experience as an Italian immigrant and entrepreneur in Finland. We talk about racial harassment and discrimination. I discuss an incident that happened to me in 2014, when I was called a "brown man" (ruskea mies) in a comment on a Finnish newspaper article. I analyze data from the FRA (EU Agency for Fundamental Rights) survey "Being Black in the EU," including the most recent 2023 edition: 43% of respondents in Finland experienced racial harassment in the last 12 months. 63% of respondents in Finland experienced racial discrimination in the last 5 years. Severe difficulties in job selection processes. Significant barriers in finding a rental apartment. As an immigrant to Finland and an entrepreneur who hires staff (I manage and have managed Italian ice cream shops here in Finland), I'll share my firsthand perspective on racism, discrimination, and mistrust of foreigners in Finland, comparing the situation to that of Italy. I'll also discuss the Perussuomalaiset (Party of the True Finns) party, its positions on immigration, and why—despite high numbers—Finland also has a high level of trust in institutions, which leads more people to report incidents of racism than other European countries.
