Jordan Chiles: My Aunt’s T1D Diagnosis Story

Before Jordan Chiles was a world-renowned gymnast, she faced arguably one of the greatest challenges of her life: when her beloved Aunt April was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Growing up in a close-knit family, Jordan was devasted by the news, and because her family had no known history of T1D (which is true for ~90% of those who develop the disease), she felt confused and helpless. When April’s health worsened, she came to live with Jordan’s family so that they could better support, monitor, and care for her. Looking back on this time, Jordan thinks knowing sooner could have made all the difference both for her aunt and her family. And she’s not alone: According to “The Cost of Not Knowing” survey by Beyond Type 1 and commissioned by Sanofi, 85% of adults with T1D think their life may have been different had they screened and known sooner about their T1D diagnosis. Knowledge truly is power. That’s why Jordan is proud to advocate for greater awareness around T1D screening—because there’s strength in preparation.
