This perception was greatly reinforced during World War II when, fighting on the side of Germany, Italian troops not only failed to conquer much smaller nations with fewer soldiers and weapons, as was the case with their invasion of Greece, but even when they had ten times more soldiers, tanks, and weapons than their enemies in Africa, they barely managed a victory that nonetheless left them in a deplorable state for fighting on other fronts. So disastrous was their performance in this conflict that in their final days, the Germans (their own allies) decided it would be best to destroy order within the Italian army themselves to prevent a defection, and their supreme leader, Benito Mussolini, would not even have the opportunity to remove his [the flag/the symbol of the war]. Instead of living his life, he was captured, dragged through the streets, condemned, and hanged by the very crowds that years before had marched with him to seize the country… but… why did all this happen?… Is there a real reason beyond sheer incompetence to explain Italy's lackluster participation in this war?
