How to Navigate Interstates & Freeways | New Driver Smart

When navigating along freeways and interstates, mile markers are your most important tool. Mile markers will allow you to precisely locate exits, junctions, and local attractions. As well, mile markers are a key defensive driving tool. If you know that you are getting off the freeway at MM 278 and you are currently at MM 273, you know that you have 5 miles (kilometres) before exiting. Thus, you are going to start getting into your lane in preparation for exiting the freeway. Most signboards on freeways and interstates are overhead. Be sure to be under the arrow that indicates which direction you want to go. If you are travelling east on Interstate 66 outside Washington DC, for example, at MM there is a junction with Interstate 425 at MM 64 and if you want to continue on I 64, you must stay under the arrows that indicate I 64 east. The interstate system in the United States is systematic. Odd numbered interstates run north-south and even numbered interstates run east-west. If it is a 3-digit interstate, it is a ring road around an urban area, a spur road or a circumferential road, which means that the interstate is a 1/2 loop that leaves the main interstate and then connects back to the interstate. If the 3-digit interstate begins with an even number, it is either a ring road around an urban centre or it's a circumferential road. If the 3-digit interstate begins with an odd number, than it is a spur road. In Washington, DC, for example, I495 is a ring road, the I295 is a circumferential road, and the I395 is a spur road. In knowing the mile markers and what kind of interstate you’re on, in conjunction with the location of junctions, construction, exits and other oddities along the freeway, driving along a freeway is going to be easy.
