The first feeding of tomatoes after planting determines a third of the harvest, and most gardeners either rush it or apply the wrong amount. I'm Nikolai Gonchar, forty-five years in the garden, and today I'll explain how many days after planting to apply the first feeding, what to apply, and in what doses. The window is ten to fourteen days, not a day earlier. The formula is one to two to one and a half, nitrogen to phosphorus to potassium. The most important thing at this stage is phosphorus for the roots and the formation of the first clusters, and nitrogen in moderation, otherwise the bush will turn into tops. I'll discuss three effective recipes: superphosphate with urea and potassium sulfate, an herbal infusion of nettles with ash, and mullein with ash. I'll also discuss feeding tomatoes with ammonia when the seedlings are pale and urgently needed. Three common mistakes: early application, pure nitrogen without phosphorus, and feeding on dry soil. Signs of successful fertilization, signs of failure, and how to correct them. Fertilizing tomatoes outdoors in southern chernozem soils, where phosphorus is bound to calcium, requires special care, and I'll cover that too.
