For years, I blamed my addiction on childhood wounds, my father's abandonment, and the loss of my sister. However, a pivotal moment came when I realized I was only numbing that pain with drug use. I wasn't addicted because of pain, but an addict with pain. I stopped looking for someone to blame and began to understand the illness I was born with.
