Une forêt amazonienne sous l’eau… et ils veulent l’exploiter

Hi everyone, for this new episode of Flo's explorations, I'm in Petit-Saut, French Guiana. Here, in the 1990s, EDF (the French electricity company) built a dam to produce electricity. The result: 365 km² of Amazon rainforest were flooded, and now a company wants to harvest this submerged timber… Some see it as a way to improve French Guiana's energy independence and develop biomass and the local timber industry to reduce imports and create jobs. Others denounce it as an ecological disaster, endangering the entire local ecosystem and with a carbon footprint worse than that of a coal or oil-fired power plant. Did French Guiana make the right choice in deciding to exploit this timber? I'll give you as much information as possible so you can form your own opinion. Let us know what you think in the comments.
