Some of these artists came to Paris before the First World War because they wanted to paint freely. Some embraced Cubism or Fauvism, while others sought a Jewish style in art. After the war, Marc Chagall founded an art school in his hometown of Vitebsk, intended to introduce ordinary people to art and the revolution. It became an important center for the Russian avant-garde in the young Soviet Union. However, artistic disputes and personal conflicts inevitably arose there as well. Using Chagall's fascinating life story as an example, filmmaker Laurence Jourdan illustrates the tension characteristic of this era of political, artistic, and personal upheaval between a deep connection to tradition and the modernity that this generation of young Russian artists aspired to. His birth name was Moishe Khatskelevich Shagal. His family environment, his hometown of Vitebsk, and motifs from the Bible and the circus are central themes in his paintings. He also used the same recurring symbols in his mosaics, windows, and theater sets. Chagall is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century.
