Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has threatened to retaliate against Ukraine. The incident resulted in the death of one sailor and injuries to several others. In a post on X on Sunday (July 26, 2026), Araghchi expressed his anger at Kyiv, calling Ukraine's response to the attack on the Iranian merchant ship a blatant violation of the UN Charter. "Zelenskyy attacked an Iranian merchant ship, resulting in the death of a crew member. This is a blatant violation of the UN Charter, carried out at the behest of Israel to drag Europe into their war," Araghchi wrote. As reported by Al Arabiya on Monday (July 27, 2026), Kyiv's attack on the Iranian ship came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his forces had attacked ships carrying military cargo involving Iran in the Caspian Sea.
