Millions of Americans Are Being Priced Out of the Towns They Grew Up In | 4K Documentary
65% of American households — roughly 88 million families — can no longer afford the median-priced new home. Not just in San Francisco or New York. In every state in the country, including Mississippi, where 61% of households are priced out of a $267,000 median home. This report follows the numbers to the kitchen table: the monthly payment on a median American home nearly doubled in five years — from about $1,700 in early 2020 to around $3,100 by late 2025 — and the income needed to carry it climbed past $120,000 a year. Only about one in six renter households earns that. Meanwhile, homeowners as a class sit on more than $30 trillion in equity by the Federal Reserve's own tally, while cost-burdened renter households just hit an all-time record. We trace how it happened — a warning economists filed away in the late 1970s, fifty years of zoning fights and a construction shortfall of 4 to 7 million homes, the 2020–2022 price surge that locked in at 3% mortgages nobody will give up — and why the old advice to "just move somewhere cheaper" no longer works, from Montana and Idaho to small towns in Georgia and Arkansas. If the math on your own street looks like the math in this report, a like helps this reach other Americans trying to make sense of it. And tell us in the comments: what year did your own town start to feel out of reach?
