Hi there! In this video, we'll be introducing Nakijin Castle Ruins, a World Heritage Site! ...or so we planned, but unfortunately, the day of filming turned out to be cloudy. We quickly changed our plans and toured Nakijin Castle with a guide. We learned some valuable information from our guide! He told us that there's an active Noro living in Nakijin Village. I knew I had to talk to her no matter what, so I decided to go and meet her. By the way, "Noro" refers to a woman who oversees religious ceremonies. Noro originated about 500 years ago, during the reign of King Sho Shin, the third king of the Second Sho Dynasty (although some say they existed even before that). During King Sho Shin's reign, an organization of priestesses was formed in the kingdom, and they prayed for the kingdom's prosperity and bountiful harvests. The woman who reigns at the top of this organization of priestesses is called "Kikoe no Okimi." Incidentally, since the title of Kikoe no Okimi is determined by lineage, it was often the king's sister who was chosen. The highest authority among Shinto priests was the Kikoe-no-Okimi. At the top of the hierarchy was the Kikoe-no-Okimi, followed by numerous Kaminchu. Among them, the women who presided over the rituals in Nakijin Magiri were the "Nakijin Noro." In this video, we meet Yoshiko Nakaoji, the third-generation acting Noro, a role passed down through generations for approximately 500 years! We had the opportunity to hear valuable stories, such as "Why did she become a Noro?", "Why is she acting?", and "How do she conduct rituals?" We also get to see some precious magatama and hairpins! After hearing this story, we also visited the "Old Nakijin Noro Hall" at the Nakijin Castle ruins. This is truly a valuable story.
