Fibroids that protrude toward the serosa are called subserosal fibroids, fibroids that grow within the muscle layer are called intramyocardial fibroids, and fibroids that grow toward the endometrium are called submucosal fibroids. Uterine fibroids have a significant impact on menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth. The most common symptom is menorrhagia, which can cause thinning of the blood and lead to anemia. Symptoms of anemia include palpitations and shortness of breath. Uterine fibroids can also worsen menstrual pain. In addition, large fibroids can cause frequent urination, constipation, and deep vein thrombosis. 12:55 Uterine fibroids can also cause infertility. For example, submucosal fibroids can interfere with the implantation of a fertilized egg. Conversely, subserosal fibroids are thought to be less likely to cause infertility.
