Series and Parallel Combination Capacitors Part 1
Series and parallel combinations of capacitors are methods used to connect two or more capacitors in an electric circuit to obtain the desired equivalent capacitance. In a series combination, capacitors are connected one after another so that the same charge flows through each capacitor. The equivalent capacitance in series is always smaller than the smallest individual capacitor because the total distance between the plates effectively increases. Series combinations are mainly used when a lower capacitance or higher voltage handling capacity is required. In a parallel combination, all positive plates are connected together and all negative plates are connected together. In this arrangement, the potential difference across each capacitor remains the same, while the total charge stored increases. The equivalent capacitance in parallel is always greater than the largest individual capacitor because the effective plate area increases. Series and parallel combinations of capacitors are widely used in electronic circuits, power supplies, filters, tuning circuits, and energy storage applications to achieve required capacitance and voltage values.
