Vicki Baum to go (Kurzbiografie in 10 Minuten)

"The only real enemy I ever had was my father." Vicki Baum didn't have a particularly friendly start in life - and yet she became a BUCHER*STERNCHEN (BOOK*STAR), whose life story SOMMERS WELTLITERATUR TO GO presents in 10 minutes. Hedwig Baum came from a Jewish Viennese family. Her mother was mentally ill, and her young daughter – an only child – had to care for her while her hypochondriac father left the apartment, but at the same time was extremely strict with his daughter. Vicki, as she called herself, trained as a concert harpist and began a successful career as a professional musician. Her first marriage, to the journalist and author Max Prels, lasted only a short time, but led to her beginning to write herself. She then met the conductor Richard Lert, whom she married in 1916 and with whom she had two sons. She then worked as a writer, was signed by Ullstein Publishing House, and went to Berlin, where she wrote bestsellers, including STUD. CHEM. HELENE WILLFÜER (1928) and PEOPLE IN THE HOTEL (1928). Her novels have been adapted into films several times, and PEOPLE IN THE HOTEL even became a Broadway musical. In 1932, the family emigrated to the USA, where Baum worked as a screenwriter in California and died in 1960. "I am a first-class, second-rate writer."
