Sewing History | Recreating Lanvin Castillo 1960 Coat
Lanvin Castillo Vogue Paris coat reproduction: a self-taught sewing journey in couture, mindful making, and honoring fashion history. In this video, I bring to life the iconic Vogue Paris coat pattern — honoring forgotten stories, including designer Antonio Castillo, a caretaker of the Lanvin brand, and the iconic model Dovima, while reflecting on her journey as a woman and continuing to navigate my own. 0:00 – Coat preview (3 different ways of styling) 0:11 – Welcome & introduction 0:44 – Pattern details, hand-preparations, and story of Antonio Castillo 2:43 – Construction overview & couture details (collar, welts for belt, sleeves, interlining) 13:23 – Trying on the coat & story of Dovima 15:26 – Finishing touches review (buttonhole, linings, shoulders, alterations) 22:21 – Why I take the time to make a coat instead of buying one 23:37 – Wearing the coat in real life; successful pattern & would I make it again? I am self-taught, and while some techniques can be challenging, I embraced the process, practiced patiently, and learned along the way. This project was a test in a fabric I already had, keeping sustainability in mind. I fell in love with the couture details and hope to remake it in the future in a more luxurious fabric of my choosing. Every stitch is a meditation, a way to connect with the past, and a reminder that beauty can be fragile and fleeting — yet we can preserve and celebrate it through care and craft. ✨ Special thanks to Mood Fabrics NYC, where I always find inspiration — from silk linings to beautiful buttons, they’re part of my process. I look forward to sourcing a special fabric from Mood for the next iteration of this design. I highly recommend this pattern to anyone interested in sewing it and am happy to answer questions for those who want to try this beautiful design themselves. 📌 Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and turn on notifications for more explorations in vintage fashion, sewing history, and mindful making.
