But its production in Central America hides tragic stories. How did this fruit become one of the main economic drivers of Central America? How did the United Fruit Company become a true empire? And above all, how did it tragically shape the destinies of Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Guatemala? You have probably heard of banana republics; today we use the term "banana country" in a pejorative way to refer to extremely unequal countries with extremely corrupt governments, devoted to imperialism. The term "Banana republic" first appeared at the beginning of the last century in a story by the American writer O. Henry called Cabbages and Kings, set in Honduras; it refers to countries linked to banana producing and marketing companies, especially the United Fruit Company, UFCo. The production and marketing of bananas in countries such as Costa Rica, Honduras, and Guatemala became important at the beginning of the 20th century, equaling or even surpassing coffee. For example, in Honduras, bananas accounted for an average of 88% of total exports, making the country the world's leading banana exporter from 1917 until after World War II (replaced by Ecuador). In Central America, banana cultivation began in the mid-19th century, in the fertile and rainy lands of the Atlantic coasts of Costa Rica, Honduras, and Guatemala: small and medium-sized independent national farmers sold banana bunches to foreign merchants. Its development as an export crop was achieved through foreign capital investment, specifically from the United States; and this investment was the basis for the continued intervention of the United States in the domestic politics of Central American countries.
