Ivan Zhadnov, who remains AOPA President, said this was a surprise to him. Four votes were cast in favor of the new board chairman, Evgeny Kabanov, including one by proxy, and three votes against. After the vote, two of those who voted against, Alexander Mikhailov, head of the "Angel" rescue squad, and Sergey Minigulov, president of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAON), announced their resignation from the AOPA board, while Andrei Ivanov, director of the organization for 13 years, resigned. The new chairman of the board, Evgeny Kabanov, told FlightTV that he was not prepared to comment publicly on these changes. ==== Amphibious aircraft—the very name of this category unites three elements in a single quest to conquer them. Like any aircraft, the L-65 is the result of numerous compromises, but in the case of seaplanes, things are even more complex. Since the first seaplanes, designers have had to invent a way to reconcile the incompatible: somehow combining an aircraft-like structure, considered too light by shipbuilders, with the hydrodynamic contours inherent to planing vessels. Fitting the strength of a ship into the weight of an aircraft and bringing the aerodynamics of a boat closer to an aircraft fuselage—this is the classic compromise of seaplanes, and at the intersection of these contradictions, our hero of today was born. From 2005 to 2019, the Samara-based company Chaika built thirty-seven aircraft, primarily L-42, L-44, and L-45 amphibious aircraft, until its founder and chief designer, Dmitry Grekhov, reached the ideal, using accumulated experience to create the L-65 amphibious aircraft. The L-65 differs from its predecessors in its improved hydrodynamics, increased fuselage width and height, and a length of 10.5 meters, giving the aircraft a good displacement reserve and a spacious cabin. This is the optimal option for a four-seat amphibious aircraft; further increases in size would increase weight and takeoff and landing distances, reducing the number of accessible water surfaces. A larger amphibious aircraft would also require different engines that run on aviation fuel. The fuel-injected 915 Rotax engines currently installed on the L-65 run on regular automotive gasoline, allowing the aircraft to be operated without being tied to an airfield. The 4-meter cabin comfortably accommodates four respectable-sized passengers. An optional life-saving system or a full-size composting toilet, accessible even from the pilot's seat, can be installed. By squeezing the passenger seats together, two more seats can be installed behind them, making the amphibious aircraft a six-seater. With a maximum takeoff weight of 1,800 kilograms, the L-65, with two full 250-liter fuel tanks, carries a payload of half a ton over a range of 2,200 kilometers and can, with two refuelings, carry four passengers and a hundredweight of baggage from the Moscow region to the Putorana Plateau or Lake Baikal. The L-65's maximum indicated speed is 250 kilometers per hour, cruising at 3,000 meters is 230 kilometers per hour, and at sea level it's 210 kilometers per hour, so there's no point in increasing it. For a higher flight speed, the two-ton aircraft would require a longer takeoff and landing distance, including on water. In general, a high-speed aircraft and water are a dangerous combination, requiring highly skilled pilots. The L-65 is designed not for test pilots, but for ordinary private pilots who can master the intricacies of twin-engine aircraft handling and water takeoffs and landings in 10-12 hours of practical flight time. === Since 2015, the First Moscow Cadet Corps has had a flight training class where all students of the basic cadet school learn aviation piloting. It's a compulsory subject here. Cadets in grades 5 through 9 study the fundamentals of aircraft design, aircraft structure, aerodynamics, and aircraft navigation, both theoretically as in a regular school lesson and virtually, through practical assignments.
