EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #98: TICKTON Welcome back to the Beverley area folks, today we’re in Tickton, which lies approximately two miles away from Beverley town centre. Its situated just to the South of the A1035 – a road which we will become very used to seeing in the next few episodes. At around a mile in length, Tickton contains two churches, a primary school and a village shop which also serves as a post office. The name “Tickton” means “Tica’s homestead”, and Tica is believed to have been a bishop. It was first recorded in the Domesday Book as “Tichetone”. You can split this one into three distinct areas. In the very far East of the village, you have an area that’s been developed very recently, sporting as it does many new build houses and housing estates. In the centre, is the oldest part of the village, where the road becomes overshadowed by older terraces and some farmhouses. It also has most of the village’s amenities. And then, in the West, there’s Hull Bridge – which many people consider to be a separate settlement. That’s where the road Tickton sits on, once crossed the River Hull. The parish also includes two small hamlets – one called Weel and one called Eske. The road towards Weel offers a good look at the River Hull, and at Beverley’s historic shipyard via the Weel Lift Bridge. We’ll see all that and more in this episode, so let’s get walking folks.
