Rising through Zimbabwe's vibrant chimurenga and jit music scene, he created a genre entirely his own: Tuku Music. A blend of mbira, jit, rumba, and soul, his music became the voice of a people — addressing AIDS, corruption, and human dignity when silence was the safer choice. His 1990 song 'Todii' became a UNICEF global AIDS campaign anthem. He was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. He performed for Nelson Mandela. And through it all, he built the Pakare Paye Arts Centre to give the next generation of Zimbabwean artists a foundation. He passed on January 23, 2019, leaving behind 70+ albums and a legacy that cannot be erased. 💛 SUBSCRIBE to Legends of Africa — new story every week. Untold Stories.
