He loved God and wanted to obey Him. But the kings before Josiah didn't love God and didn't care for the Temple. They had abandoned the House of God; indeed, it was in ruins. Imagine how sad that made God. When Josiah grew up, he didn't like seeing the Temple in ruins, and because he loved God, he ordered the masons and carpenters to repair the Temple. One day, King Josiah ordered Shaphan, the scribe, to take money to give to Hilkiah the priest, so the priest could pay the workers who were repairing the Temple. But when Shaphan arrived at the Temple, he was surprised by something that had been lost for many years: a scroll entirely engraved with text. At that time, there was no paper, so everything was written on animal skins, which were prepared for that purpose. After receiving the engraved text, the skin was rolled up for storage. Imagine how surprised the priest was to have found that scroll with so much text amidst so much clutter and filth. Then the priest handed it to Shaphan, who took it to King Josiah. When he arrived at the palace, the scribe carefully opened the scroll and began to read to the king what was written. And, to everyone's surprise, what was written was the Law of God.
