■ A Journey of Comfort for the Sick and the Afflicted Pope Francis is unusually often described as "first." He is the first Latin American pope, the first to use the name Francis, the saint of the poor. He lives in a guesthouse for ordinary priests rather than the Apostolic Palace, travels by bus and compact car, and personally washes the feet of pagans and women. He arrived in Korea on August 14th. This visit marks his third overseas trip since taking office and his first to an Asian country. South Korea welcomed a pope for the first time in 25 years. Crowds flocked from all over the country to hear his message, leaving the venue teeming with people, chanting "Viva Papa!" From a three-generation family sleeping in a tent to an elderly couple dragging their sick bodies, many gathered from the early hours of the morning, forgetting even fatigue in the excitement of meeting the pope. Pope Francis, with his packed schedule from morning to night, demonstrated the true face of a leader. It was a 72-hour journey following in the footsteps of the Pope, who always humbled himself and reached out to the marginalized. ■ Pope Francis Wears a Yellow Ribbon Daejeon World Cup Stadium was the first time Pope Francis met with the general public during his visit to Korea. While the many who attended filled the seats with joy and anticipation, a somber atmosphere surrounded the audience. These were the bereaved families of the Sewol ferry victims and the surviving students. Among them were Lee Ho-jin, the father of the late Lee Seung-hyun, who had walked 900 kilometers carrying a 6kg cross, and Kim Hak-il, the father of the late Kim Woong-gi. Pope Francis arranged meetings with each of them, listening to their stories and soothing their wounds. At Gwanghwamun, Kim Young-o, the father of the late Kim Yu-min, waited for the Pope, having been on a hunger strike for 33 days. The next day, a miracle occurred. During the motorcade before the beatification ceremony, Pope Francis made an unusual stop, got out of his car, and slowly approached Kim Young-o. And he cherished the letter, handwritten by Yumin's father. Pope Francis, who says, "There is no neutrality in the face of human suffering," wore a yellow ribbon throughout his visit to Korea and embraced the families of the Sewol ferry victims. ■ The Gift Left Behind by the Pope During his visit to Korea, Pope Francis met not only the families of the Sewol ferry victims, but also the disabled in Kkotdongne, the laid-off workers of Ssangyong Motors, and the comfort women, the victims of modern times who are suffering and hurting. Visiting Kkotdongne, the Pope kissed and blessed the disabled at eye level. Early in the morning on the day of the final Mass at Myeongdong Cathedral, comfort woman survivor Kang Il-chul's eyes welled up, saying she felt as if decades of resentment were finally being released. Pope Francis, with his warm hand, offered comfort to the wounded.
