Ancient Khmer Temple Ruins Unearthed in Housing Development, Dating Back 800-1,000 Years April 25, 2026, Nakhon Ratchasima – Reporters investigated the discovery of a large sandstone temple ruin on private land in Prang Thong Niwet Village, Ban Mai Subdistrict, Mueang District, Nakhon Ratchasima. Officials from the Fine Arts Department, Region 10, Nakhon Ratchasima, conducted a detailed archaeological excavation and found the foundation to be a Khmer-style temple dating back to the 16th-18th Buddhist centuries, or approximately 800-1,000 years old. Mr. Suchart Srinualkaew, advisor to the landowner, revealed that the 130-rai area was originally overgrown forest. During land clearing for a real estate development project, numerous sandstone boulders were discovered buried underground. Construction was immediately halted, and the Fine Arts Department was notified. The landowner agreed to donate approximately 29 square wa (about 8.9 hectares) of land where the significant evidence was found to the government for further study. Mr. Wannapong Palakawong Na Ayutthaya, a senior archaeologist, also commented on the discovery. The report indicates that on its sixth day of excavation, a well-preserved lotus base and a rectangular base, along with a base supporting a religious image, were found, confirming its status as a Hindu religious site. Furthermore, a large ancient "baray" (reservoir) or pond (Nong Bua) was discovered only 100 meters away, reflecting a past dense ancient community.
