Today I'll show you how to modernize your old transceiver (like my trusty Kenwood TS-450S) by adding a homemade and inexpensive panadapter using a $35 SDR receiver. In this step-by-step tutorial, we'll see how to "steal" the Intermediate Frequency (IF) signal from our transceiver to visualize everything happening in the band in real time. You won't just hear the stations, now you'll be able to see them! What will we cover in this video? The concept: What a panadapter is and how it works with an SDR plug. How to identify the correct intermediate frequency in the manuals (examples with the TS-450S and FT-757). Building the RF Amplifier: We'll build a Class A amplifier with a very cheap J310 JFET transistor and recycled components. Manhattan-style mounting: A quick and effective construction technique on a copper-clad board. Technical Recycling: How to make a toroid using the core of a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). Installation and Testing: Connection to the test point (TP1) and final commissioning. Materials Needed: SDR receiver (RTL-SDR or similar). J310 JFET transistor. Recycled toroid from a CFL lamp. 1nF capacitor (for isolation). Copper-plated board and thin RF wires. Give your station a new life!
