Lad Lum Kaew Subdistrict, Lad Lum Kaew District, Pathum Thani Province, despite its proximity to Bangkok and the city's expansion in all directions, which has transformed agricultural land into residential areas, many people here still practice agriculture, whether gardening or rice farming. They lead a simple life, and the rice paddies after harvest have fostered mutual support between farmers and free-range duck farmers. Ms. Kamonporn Jaisard (Dao) and Mr. Narong Kaewmanee (Phon), owners of 12,000 free-range ducks, have been raising free-range ducks in this district for eight years. They say that Lad Lum Kaew's water is abundant, allowing for year-round rice farming. The fields are also teeming with rice paddies and apple snails, providing high-quality duck eggs. Importantly, the kind farmers here allow them to raise their ducks free of charge. Free-range ducks are widely raised in central Thailand, significantly reducing the costs of raising ducks. They also help farmers cut down on the weeds associated with the weeds, which can be mixed with high-quality rice. Farmers must pay thousands of baht per plot for each round of cutting. Before ducks are brought to the fields, the water must be pumped full and pesticides are not sprayed. This helps keep the ducks cool and free from harm. No compensation is required, as both parties benefit. The ducks have food to eat, which allows the farmers to sell their eggs, while the farmers eliminate pests. Furthermore, small acts of kindness are also practiced, such as the duck farmers bringing their eggs to the farmers. Farmers, if they have crops, also share the same with the duck farmers. Eggs from free-range ducks vary in color: ducks that eat shellfish are red-orange, while ducks that eat rice are yellow. Free-range duck farmers can earn a significant income from their eggs annually. If duck owners also raise young ducks for sale, their income can double. Currently, the number of free-range duck farmers has increased, resulting in insufficient feed for their ducks. They must travel long distances to the northeastern region to find food for their ducks. This travel is often done at night or in the early morning to protect the ducks from the heat, which can lead to their deaths. Duck owners must also obtain a permit to transport their animals across borders, confirming that their practice is legal.
