The Illusion of Control — Your Brain's Favorite Lie
That crosswalk button you pressed this morning was not connected to anything. The light was on a timer. It changed on its own. But your brain drew a line between your finger and the green light and called it cause and effect. That line does not exist. In 1975, Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer ran a deceptively simple experiment. She set up an identical lottery — same odds, same prize — and let some people pick their own tickets while handing others random ones. When she offered to buy the tickets back, the people who chose their own demanded four times more money. The act of choosing made them feel like they had changed the odds. They had not. This experiment became the foundation for what psychologists now call the illusion of control — the tendency to believe you are influencing outcomes you have zero power over. Langer's findings opened a door that led from grocery stores to casinos to Wall Street trading floors. This video covers what the illusion of control actually is and how Langer proved it, why sixty-six thousand day traders lost money by doing more, how casinos are architecturally designed to feed this illusion, and why knowing about it does not make it stop. 📄 Langer, E.J.
