Queen Ena of Spain's Jewels — The British Princess Who Brought Diamonds to the Spanish Court

Queen Ena of Spain's Jewels — The British Princess Who Brought Diamonds to the Spanish Court On 31 May 1906, a twenty-year-old British princess arrived in Madrid to marry a king — and had no idea she was stepping into one of the most tragic days in European royal history. Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, known as Ena, became Queen of Spain on the very same day an anarchist bomb exploded during the wedding procession, killing twenty-four people and turning celebration into chaos and tragedy. Yet what she did next — appearing on the palace balcony still wearing her royal jewels — defined the beginning of her extraordinary reign. Her husband, Alfonso XIII of Spain, surrounded her with exceptional jewels: diamond tiaras from Ansorena, pearl pieces later transformed by Cartier, emeralds inherited from Empress Eugénie, and personal gifts that would become some of the most important treasures in Spanish royal history. But Ena’s life was never a fairy tale. It was marked by political turmoil, a strained marriage, the devastating loss of her two haemophiliac sons, the fall of the Spanish monarchy, and decades of exile in Switzerland. Despite everything, she preserved her jewels — not as decoration, but as legacy, identity, and survival. In exile, she continued shaping her collection, redesigning inherited pieces in Paris, commissioning new interpretations, and carefully preserving what would become the foundation of the Spanish crown jewels. In her 1963 will, she formally defined the “joyas de pasar” — the jewels meant to pass on — ensuring their preservation for generations of the Spanish royal family. The legacy of Queen Ena’s collection continues through generations: Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg — the original owner and creator of the collection’s identity Sofía of Spain — preserved and wore key tiaras and parures throughout the second half of the 20th century. Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano — the current queen, who wears the jewels at major state occasions Leonor, Princess of Asturias — the future queen, who is expected to inherit the most important pieces Today, these jewels appear at royal weddings, state banquets, and diplomatic events, linking modern Spain with a lost monarchy and a queen who lived between two worlds: royal splendour and personal exile. This video explores: The tiara that defined a queen The diamond rivière that grew with a broken marriage Cartier transformations that reshaped royal jewellery history Emeralds that travelled through empires and revolutions And the will that still defines the Spanish crown jewels today This is the story of Queen Ena of Spain — and the jewels that outlived her throne. ____ #jewellery #jewels
