History of South Africa #5 - diamonds, gold and concerted British imperialism

While the British government had been somewhat reluctant about expanding through Southern Africa up to the 1860s, the discovery of diamonds and gold changed that attitude. The region was now highly valuable, and the British developed a more coordinated, aggressive imperialism that was intended to consolidate its hegemony in Southern Africa.
