Peru during World War II
During World War II, Peru maintained a policy of neutrality and did not actively participate in the conflict. The Peruvian government, led by President Manuel Prado, declared its neutrality at the beginning of the war and sought to avoid becoming directly involved in the global conflict. However, despite its official stance of neutrality, Peru did experience some indirect impacts of the war. The country faced economic challenges due to disruptions in international trade, and there were concerns about the potential for Axis powers, particularly Germany and Japan, to threaten the region. As a result, Peru, like many other Latin American countries, took measures to strengthen its defense capabilities and enhance security. Peru did establish diplomatic relations with the Allied powers and cooperated with the United States in certain areas. The Peruvian government allowed the United States to establish air bases on its territory to facilitate the transportation of supplies and personnel to support the war effort. Additionally, Peru participated in regional conferences and initiatives aimed at maintaining stability and security in the Americas. Overall, while Peru officially maintained a position of neutrality during World War II, it did take some measures to protect its interests and contribute indirectly to the Allied cause through cooperation with the United States.
