Sermon from June 21, 2026 Maciej Bishop OP Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1st Reading (Jeremiah 20:10-13) The Lord Watches Over the Just A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah Jeremiah said: "I have heard the slander of many: 'Terror is all around! Report it, let us report it!' All my friends are watching for my downfall: 'Perhaps he will be deceived, so that we may overcome him and take vengeance on him!' But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; therefore my persecutors will cease and not prevail. They will be utterly ashamed of their defeat, covered with eternal and unforgettable shame. O Lord of hosts, you who test the righteous and look upon the mind and heart, grant me to see your vengeance upon them. For I have committed my cause to you. Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord! For he has saved the life of the poor from the hand of evildoers." Second Reading (Romans 5:12-15) Adam is a type of Christ A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Romans Brothers: Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned. For even before the Law, sin was in the world, yet sin is not imputed when there is no Law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned by transgression like Adam. He is a type of the One who was to come. But the case of transgression is not the same as the case of the gift of grace. For if by the transgression of the one man death came to all, how much more did the grace and gift of God, by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to all. Gospel (Mt 10:26-33) Do not fear those who kill the body Words of the Gospel according to St. Matthew Jesus said to his apostles: "Do not fear men; for nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, nor concealed that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, proclaim on the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Do they not sell two sparrows for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's will. But even the very hairs on your head have been numbered. Therefore do not be afraid: you are of more value than many sparrows. Therefore everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies me before others, I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven."
