What is Superhet Radio Image - details, causes, specifications
The image response of a superhet or superheterodyne radio is a key aspect of its performance specification. This video details what the superhet image is, how the image response occurs and how radio receivers can be designed to improve the image response performance. The radio receiver specifications for image performance are also explained. A superhet radio with a poor image performance will experience high levels of interference because signals on the image frequency will interference with those on the wanted frequency. An explanation of the way in the superhet receiver uses a mixer to convert signals to a fixed intermediate frequency stage. However for any local oscillator frequency there are two signals that can enter the intermediate frequency stage. One is the wanted signal and the other the image signal. The video details how the radio image performance can be improved. One method is to improve the RF tuning, but the other is to increase the frequency of the IF. It is also important to understand the superhet image specifications and why the frequency for the specification is important, and degrades with increasing frequency.
