Travel Writing Basics: From Personal Travel Journals to Published Travel Tales
"How can I become a travel writer?" People ask me that question a lot. I've worked as a freelance travel writer and writing coach for more than two decades. In this 50-minute webinar, sponsored by Wildland Adventures and my own website, Globejotting.com, I share my top tips for how to get started. We begin with a crash course in travel journaling. I help viewers tackle the two biggest challenges travel journalers face: How do you write content that's compelling and really captures the spirit of the journey? And ... how do you simply find time to write in the middle of an exciting trip? Then we move on to writing travel tales you can publish -- the basic structure of a well-written travel article, as well as the one key mstake many rookie travel writers make that keeps them from getting published. I hosted this webinar from my living room in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, on November 15, 2016. Moderating the event from her office in Seattle was Pam Perry of Wildland adventures. I'm partnering with Wildland to lead a special travel writing tour of Vietnam. It will be a tour and a travel writing workshop rolled into one -- a super fun trip with a small group of aspiring writers (beginners are welcome) in which we'll explore Vietnam through a writer's eye and come home with big stories. Different people travel for different reasons: history, culture, natural wonders, food, adventure, or simply to relax. But there’s one reason we all travel that we often don’t think about: we travel for stories. Our vacations might be short, but the stories we accumulate along the way are things we get to keep for a lifetime.
