Ce que l’on ne comprend pas sur l’addiction, avec Pr. Laurent Karila, psychiatre addictologue

We all know someone, directly or indirectly, who is suffering from an addiction. Sometimes it's visible. And often it's much more hidden. Because being an addict (or a recovering addict) is shameful. And that's the whole problem. However, today, the phenomenon is no longer marginal: hard drug use is exploding, alcohol is destroying lives at all ages, not to mention medication, tobacco, gambling, eating disorders, and of course, social media. It's clear that addiction is everywhere and that the world today encourages us to fall into behaviors that are often harmful to ourselves and those around us. To shed light on this poorly understood subject, I invited Laurent Karila. A professor of psychiatry, a huge heavy metal fan, with a sharp wit and impressive knowledge, he is now the leading authority on addiction in France. In this episode, I asked him the questions we all ask ourselves: What chemical changes occur in the brain when someone is addicted? Why do some people become addicted and others don't? Can you recover from addiction? And how? Are men and women equally affected by this phenomenon? Is it really a matter of willpower to overcome it? What should those around the person do? How can you protect your children and teenagers? A fascinating and profoundly useful conversation. I won't say any more and will let you listen to my conversation with Laurent Karila.
