The deep wells of the Borana, Ethiopia (taken from the TV-doc. "A Journey in the history of water".
The deep wells of the Borana people in southern Ethiopia must be one of the best examples that can be used to illustrate how the character of a particular water resource and traditional water exploitation technology can be interlinked and impacted by each other. This clip is filmed inside one of the unique wells of the Borana. These wells have for centuries provided water for a huge number of cattle, goats and people during the long dry season Due to the crucial role of this human chain in lifting up the water that the whole society depends upon, cooperation has been an absolute necessity. The clip also addresses the overriding and fundamental question of the relationships between water ecology or waterscapes and political and economic institutions, a topic I later have examined in different water-society relations many places in the world. This scene is taken from the documentary "A Journey in the history of water", made in cooperation with NRK. The film has been shown in about 150 countries and was bought by among others the National Geographic, Discovery and Al Arabiya networks.
